Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades (it is without an ‘h’ at the end) will finally go before the cameras in November. The Shah Rukh Khan starrer is expected to be released in early 2005. It would’ve been launched much earlier but got delayed, due to the hero’s back problem and consequent surgery. Anyway, with Shah Rukh having completed Kal Ho Naa Ho and more than half-way through his home production, Main Hoon Na, he is due to start shooting for two news films – one, by Yash Chopra and the other being Swades.

THE SHORT STORYLINE OF "SWADES"

In this film he plays Mohan, a scientist who is nearly lost to a lucrative job in the USA. He returns home for a break and uses the occasion to also sing and dance with rustic folks and to romance with childhood sweetheart Gita, a village school teacher. Will Mohan stay on in India or return to the USA?

For several days Shah Rukh kicked up much dust in the village, keeping awake the peasantry that was hired in their hundreds to dance with him for the camera, Boond, boond dariya hai warna saagar kya hai Javed Akhtar’s lyrics sung to A.R. Rahman’s tunes reminded me of the song taught to us in childhood by Anglo-Indian teachers: “Little drops of water, little grains of sand, make the mighty ocean and the beauteous land”.

The unit of Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt Ltd.s 'Swades' returned to Bombay recently after an 85-day shooting schedule in the interiors of Maharasthra .

The film is now nearing completion . Being produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker , it stars Shah Rukh Khan , newfind Gayatri Joshi , Kishori Balal , Rajesh Vivek , Dayashankar Pandey , Lekh Tandon , Vishnudatt Gaur , Raja Awasthi , Farrukh Jaffar , Bhim Vakani , Vishwa S. Badola , Rajesh Balwani , Rahul Vohra , Bachan Pachehra and master Smit Sheth .

Story is by M.G. Sathyanarayna Rao and Ashutosh Gowarikar and dialogues by K.P, Saxena . Music is by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar .

Ashutosh Gowarikar: Mission 'blocking' accomplished!

Ashutosh Gowarikar is a relaxed man. He has every reason to be. After slogging in the heat and dust of Wye (a good 4 hours drive from Mumbai), Gowarikar has managed to wrap up the long shooting schedule of his next ambitious project ‘Swades’ on time. And like his earlier film ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’ too has been a closely guarded affair; not a word about the content and the other star cast of the film has been leaked out to the press. “I have been shooting in the heat and have been completely tanned. See, my skin has turned brown,” he grins. If only he’d told us earlier, there are such things as sun block (we would’ve sent him a case) you know. But we think that Ashu prefers media-block, at least until the film is ready for release. So guess we’ll have to wait till Independence Day, 15 August (when the film will hit the screen) to know more about it. Till then, keep blocking!

Swades in USA

Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Swades' is progressing at jet speed . After completing shooting at Wai (near Nasik in Maharashtra as we had told you long back) , the unit of the Shah Rukh starrer moves to Us Of A for a 10-day stint .

In early April , Ashutosh will head for Delhi for a further 15-day shooting stint . That would mark the end of shooting of the 'Lagaan' director's new film being jointly produced by Gowariker and UTV .

After 'Chalte Chalte' this would be Shah Rukh's fastest film and as we know Ashutosh plans to release 'Swades'on 15th August .

As I personally contacted the Indiafm they mailed me back and told me that Shahrukh khan just arrived in Mumbai from US.

Swades is one movie to look out for.

SRK's working on his next film, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Swades. A modern-day film that talks of the, ‘‘villages of India, the intelligentsia, what could be done at grassroot levels to alleviate rural problems of India and goes as far as NASA.’’

According to reports, SRK is in Houston TX, USA to do some shooting NASA. He has taken his whole family for this trip. SRK playing a scientist role will certainly be different for him!!!

And, according to Rahman as reported earlier, the music of Swades is said to be even bolder than Lagaan's -similiarly combining Indian folk, contemporary, and Western classical.

Shahrukh says:: It's socially relevant, it's a story that needs to be told, and interestingly made. It is not my prerogative to talk about it now. It is Ashutosh Gowarikar's call to talk about it, but it is definitely saying something that needs to be told.

LACK OF FAITH

Nana Phadnis must be feeling proud. Although many films are shot in Menavali, the hometown of the famed Maratha who designed an anti-British plan way back in the 18th century, with Swades, Ashutosh Gowariker hopes to awaken a renewed sense of love for the land in the local community. He is shooting the film in this Maharashtrian village on the banks of the Krishna river.

The last time that this area in Satara district was in the public glare was over half a century ago. For four years a parallel government made the home of Phadnis its capital and ruled over an area of nearly one thousand square miles between the Neera and Warna rivers in defiance of the British in the early 1940s. The Prati Sarkar was the brainchild of simple peasants who were inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call to the colonisers to quit India in 1942. Declaring itself free of the British, the independent government set up courts to settle land disputes, tried dacoits and helped women who were harshly treated by husbands addicted to drinks and drugs.

The government’s military, patterned on the Red Army in Russia, was trained by members of the INA. To make sure that the state treasury never dried up, political dacoity was encouraged and government funds outside its own territory were raided. The popular movement was abandoned once the British finally gave up and the Congress came to power in June 1946.

But when told this inspiring story about the historic significance of the place where he is shooting Swades, Shah Rukh Khan says that he is unable to spot any social message in a film. He prides himself on being a bhand or buffoon. While on screen he loves to just entertain, he says. What made Lagaan, Gowariker’s last film, interesting for Shah Rukh was the cricket, says the superstar

MORE INFO ON RELEASE DATE:

We recently had the privelage of listening to K.P. Saxena , the dialogue writer of ´Swades´ and he had something interesting to say about the release date of ´Swades´ , which has been publicised as 15th August , along with Subhash Ghai´s ´Kisna´ .

According to Mr. Saxena ´Swades´ may come earlier than expected that is in July . Now one cannot say how right he is but being associated with the movie.

WHAT AN AMERICAN FILM JOURNALIST SAYS:

Am American journalist who knew director Ashutosh Gowarikar when Lagaan was nominated in oscars and the journalist met Ashutosh there. Now again he was on the sets in india and on NASA as well.

He saw lagaan two times and found it one of the most classic film of all time. And now he says, if SWADES surpasses Lagaan's success and fame and Shahrukh khan's acting is superb then this film is 100% an oscar worthy.

He always wanted to work with Shahrukh khan,but there was way always whenever Ashutosh offered Srk a film, whether Srk was busy or out of country. He wanted to work with Shahrukh khan in Lagaan, but Shahrukh khan said that he doesn't have the enough money to produce the film by himself and also he was busy with some other work. So Shahrukh talked to Aamir and Gave Aamir to Gowarikar. And Gowarikar said to SRK I have something different for you.

Now Director says, I have seen many films of Srk and each of them were an award winners as his acting is brilliant. But in Swades my own film I say that Srk has given a completly different performance and I called it electrifying and brilliant
